Identity - and parentage testing
proof of identity)
- the micro satellite analysis is a molecular genetic method to establish an individual DNA profile (genetic fingerprinting) of an animal. The total number of microsatellites in combination results in the distinctive genetic fingerprint of an individual and is unique for this individual with a probability of more than 99.9%.
- as opposed to tattoo- or microchip numbers the DNA profile is forgery- proof and records will be kept in the lab past the death of the animal.
- an animal which was stolen or lost can be clearly identified using the data kept on file.
Parentage testing ( paternity test)
- based on the DNA profile ( see above) parentage testing can be performed. This test can identify the biological parents of an animal. In order to uncover false descending, the DNA profile of the assumed parent animals are compared with the DNA profile of the descendants
- for the parentage assessment samples must be tested from the offspring as well as from the father and the mother. This applies also, if the maternity is secured and only the paternity must be clarified.
